the design

For this silk fan, Ottimare found inspiration in a sketch from the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam by Leo van Gestel, a Dutch painter from the early twentieth century. With tough sketchy lines, he depicted two girls. The drawing was edited by the designer of Ottimare and formed the basis of an oil painting by the designer. The two girls seem to blend into each other and admire themselves and one another. Are they sisters who take selfies? This composition was then hand-painted and fixed on silk by Ottimare and later sent to a specialized studio in Spain, where the silk was stretched on the wooden frame.

How silk hand fans of Ottimare are made

After fixing the silk paint, the assembly of the fan was outsourced to a specialized family owned workshop in Spain. In their atelier, with over 200 years of experience, the silk is stiffened, manually pleated and precisely stretched on the wooden frame. The woorden frames are Spanish handicraft and carry the official Spanish quality mark 'AEA Abanico Español'.

AEA is the abbreviation Abanico Artesanos Español. It is the distinctive brand for artisanally produced fans from Spanish soil. This mark is engraved on the back of the fan frame and guarantees the high quality of the wooden frames of the Spanish fans.
